Our kit is designed to run the LS standalone. That means the engine could run outside of the vehicle with just the PCM (computer), wiring harness, and a fuel source. This is how your engine will be running inside of your Land Rover. We only share a few signals with the Land Rover's computer to keep all factory systems working. Including key ignition, anti-theft, traction control, and gauges. Therefore, we can buy a professionally made standalone LS wiring harness. Then modify the Rover harness ourselves.
It's a good idea to purchase your engine before purchasing your LS harness. That way you can get a harness with the correct connectors for the injectors and sensors that your engine came with.
I's also a good idea to purchase you wiring harness before purchasing any new sensors.
You have 3 main options:
Recommended: Buy a new custom harness for your engine. We recommend using BP Automotive, PSI Conversion or Speartech.
Buy a cheaper wiring harness from Ebay or Amazon (tread carefully)
Strip down a factory GM harness yourself. (e.g. the harness from your donor vehicle)
Hire a LS wiring harness rework service to strip the factory GM harness for you.
Keep in mind that the original GM harness will be about 20 years old at this point and could be crusty and damaged.
When purchasing a custom harness you will have to select some options to match your engine. The examples below assume you are going with a Gen 3 truck engine as we recommend.
Red/Blue: The harness need to be drive-by-cable (DBC) for a Vortec 24X Gen 3. It should have Red and Blue connectors.
Transmission: The harness ideally needs to be setup for a manual (T56) or non-electric automatic transmission. This is only so you don't have a bunch of unnecessary GM transmission connectors hanging loose.
Injectors: Choose injector connectors based on the engine you have and the injectors that came with it. There are three options (EV6, Multec, and EV1)
MAF: Choose the 5-pin truck MAF from 99-07.
Alternator: Choose the 4-pin option
MAP: Choose what is found on your engine, usually it's Delphi
A/C: not needed on the GM harness. We are using the Rover AC compressor.
Cruise control: not needed on the GM harness. This is also controlled by the Rover side.
Ask for the alternator wires to be extended by 16 inches so you don't have to extend them yourself.
Ask for the EVAP purga wires to be added to your harness, so you don't have to add them yourself.
Use online guides to figure out what injectors you have. If you get the wrong connectors, injector pigtail adapters can be used to fix the issue.
Drive-by-wire (DBW) setups are not officially supported, so make sure you buy a drive-by-cable (DBC) harness (and RED/BLUE PCM to match).
Ebay/Amazon wiring harnesses: These cheaper harnesses can be used at your own risk. Some are okay, but there are reports of them not being properly wired and tested. Most of the time you will need adapters for the MAF and injectors.
We like to buy quality harnesses to avoid chasing down electrical issues in the future. However, if that's not in the budget, there are some more affordable options. Just keep in mind that you get what you pay for. These options will not be as durable or may come miswired. You may need adapters for some of the connectors.
A little more affordable without being frighteningly cheap.
These are very attractively priced. Some people reportedly have success with these, but they can be hit or miss. The durability long term will not be as good.
Here is an example of how to buy a harness from BP Automotive.
NOTE: If you need preserve emissions equipment, you may need to make a special request. From the site: This harness is for pre-emissions vehicles or for off-road use only. This harness does not have provisions for EGR, AIR, EVAP, or Rear O2 Sensors. We can add these for an additional cost, however, in most cases, they are not needed. IF EMISSIONS ARE NEEDED YOUR HARNESS WILL INCUR A LEAD TIME. Please email for more information!
Go to LS SWAP HARNESSES and select Gen III.
Then Select Gen III DBC (drive-by-cable)
Go to LS SWAP HARNESSES and select Gen III.
Then Select Gen III DBC (drive-by-cable)
Next, select the injector type to match your engine.
Next, select T56 transmission.
Select Vortec 5-wire MAF, 4-cavity alternator, and Whichever MAP sensor you have (we have Delphi).
