Here are the overall steps for removing the Rover V8. Don't throw anything away just yet, and make sure to disconnect the wires cleanly without cutting anything. Per the Land Rover RAVE manual, remove parts in this order:
Disconnect the battery
Drain engine oil and coolant
Remove the hood
Remove air filter housing, intake hose, and MAF
Remove the clutch fan
Remove all cooling hoses
Remove the radiator (makes it easier to remove and install engines)
Place a board in front of the condenser to avoid damage
Transmission cooler - we think this might be able to stay connected. We are doing to find out for sure during the beta period.
Power steering lines: disconnect two lines at PS pump
Disconnect throttle and cruise control cables, set cables aside (lay them on the windshield cowl)
AC Compressor: Don't undo the hoses, just unbolt the compressor and set it aside where the air box used to be
Upper intake plenum: detach all hoses, unbolt and remove
Engine wiring harness: disconnect all connectors. Start with the fuel injectors and keep going until the entire harness is loose. You can disconnect the O2 sensors after the engine is out, if preferred.
Disconnect engine ground straps. One in the front by the alternator and on the back of the driver’s side cylinder head. You can keep these and reuse them if they are in good condition.
Remove the entire rover wiring harness. Disconnect it from the fuse box. Disconnect all connections from the Bosch ECU from the pug closest to you first, then each successive plug moving backwards. Remove the kickplate in the passenger footwell and you can remove the glovebox for extra room. From the engine bay squeeze the grommet holding the wiring harness and pull it out of the firewall. Carefully, pull the ECU plugs out through the hole in the firewall. Set the harness aside.
Exhaust: detach the Y pipe from the exhaust manifolds.
Loosen the transmission and transfer case mount bolts so that the transmission can move around freely.
Remove the torque converter bolts. There is a rubber access plug that leads directly to them. There are 4 bolts.
Engine: we recommend removing the heads first. This will make it so much easier to get to the bellhousing bolts. Another tip: you can attach your engine hoist to the engine at this point. Lift the engine slightly and remove the engine mounts. Now you can lower the engine and reach the upper bellhousing bolts much easier.
Remove the bellhousing bolts. Before removing the last 2 bolts, support the transmission with a jack so it does not fall when the engine is removed.
Lift and remove the engine.
Remove the secondary air injection pump (if equipped) and any other SAI equipment. You won't be needing it.
Keep the Rover's oil pressure sensor. We will adapt it to the LS so the oil pressure dash light still works.
Keep the Rover's coolant temperature sensor (on lower intake)
